Susan Barton
Hi, I’m Susan. I was diagnosed with Lobular Breast Cancer in 2019. It was Stage 3 hormone-negative, HER2-positive Pleomorphic Lobular Breast Cancer that had spread to all 22 removed lymph nodes. As a trustee, I bring both lived experience and a deep commitment to transforming how this disease is understood, diagnosed, and treated.
This personal journey drives my passion for raising awareness, challenging outdated assumptions, and advocating for change. I’m determined to ensure Lobular Breast Cancer is recognised as the distinct and diverse disease it is, not treated as a footnote to ductal breast cancer.
Professionally, I’m a UK civil servant with over 25 years of leadership experience in central government. I’ve shaped national and international policy, led high-performing teams, and delivered impact through stakeholder engagement and evidence-based decision-making. I also hold a biological sciences degree, an MBA, and have served as a founding Director and Company Secretary of a community interest company—experience that strengthens my governance and strategic insight.
As a trustee of Lobular Breast Cancer UK, I’m proud to combine personal insight with professional expertise to help drive our mission to save lives. I advocate for UK-wide policy and treatment guidelines that reflect the realities of Lobular Breast Cancer, push for better data disaggregation, and promote greater understanding of its subtypes.
I’m especially committed to amplifying underrepresented voices—particularly women from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, intersectional women, and men within the Lobular Breast Cancer community. I believe in inclusive leadership rooted in care, compassion, and courage—for ourselves, our colleagues, and our volunteers.
