We are delighted that Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and his wife Susie have backed our #22ADayUK campaign, representing the 22 people who are diagnosed every day in the UK with this distinct disease.
Mr and Mrs Cleverly, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2021, were keen to help, and posed on the stairs of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office together with members of the Department’s Cancer Support Network.
“Being told you have breast cancer is one of the most frightening things for any woman. It can be particularly distressing when you hear you might have a rarer form of the disease such as Lobular. That’s why I am delighted to support the LBCUK campaign,” said Mrs Cleverly.
Her husband was also keen to give his backing. “When Susie was diagnosed, I could not speak or sleep. I was in total shock. Just hearing the word cancer used in connection with someone you love is terrifying. I know that diagnosis and treatment is improving all the time, but plainly there are still gaps in our knowledge,” explained the Foreign Secretary.
He added: “LBCUK are doing incredible work, and if we can help highlight their efforts by joining their campaign, even in this small way, then we are only too happy.”
Claire Turner, our Chair, said: “We hugely appreciate the support of the Foreign Secretary and his wife. It means so much to all our members that our work is being acknowledged at such a high level, and helping our #22ADayUK campaign to reach so many more people.”
A big thank you also to Susan Barton who helped to organise the photograph. Susan has had her own Lobular diagnosis and shared her own story.
