Yesterday we joined 60 cancer charities in Victoria Tower Gardens in London, as part of the Once Cancer Voice coalition. We were there to call on the government to ensure it fully funds a National Cancer Plan that delivers the transformational change needed across cancer services. As cancer cases are projected to soar in England by 2024, there is a risk that the NHS will be unable to cope unless action is taken to prevent the disease and diagnose it earlier when it is more treatable.
What we are calling for, together
As part of the One Cancer Voice coalition, we are calling for ministers to meet six ‘tests’ that will help make England a world leader when it comes to cancer care. The six ‘tests’ are:
- A pledge to meet all cancer waiting times by the end of parliament in 2029
- A new earlier diagnosis target, with improved screening programmes
- The introduction of strong cancer prevention policies
- Addressing inequalities in patient care
- Improving access to clinical trials for cancer patients
- Better support for people to live well with and beyond cancer
What we are calling for, for Lobular patients
Lobular Breast Cancer is unique, yet more common than people think. 15% of all breast cancers are Lobular, yet it is still under-studied and rarely recognised as a distinct and different disease.
Specifically, we at LBCUK are calling for:
- Lobular Breast Cancer to be recognised as a distinct disease and for appropriate Treatment Guidelines
- For better screening programmes and imaging as a priority, as Lobular can be difficult to be seen on mammograms for some patients
- For Lobular patients to be proportionately represented in clinical trials and their data to be reported on
“We were proud to stand alongside other cancer charities, particularly breast cancer charities, in calling for the government to fully fund a National Cancer Plan that will deliver real change for people living with cancer. LBCUK is committed to raising knowledge and understanding of Lobular Breast Cancer and ensure that Lobular patients are represented. We enjoyed meeting charity staff and people with lived experience of cancer at the One Cancer Voice event. We made new connections, strengthened existing relationships and discussed how we can better collaborate to help put Lobular in the spotlight.”
