We’ve recently been working with the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) on ensuring that the patient voice is included in their new highlight notice for Lobular Breast Cancer.

What does this mean and why is it important?

NIHR funds millions of pounds of research in the UK and a highlight notice is their way of saying to clinicians and researchers: “We really want you to apply for research funding in this area”.

It’s the first time this has happened for Lobular – this is a huge step forward in encouraging targeted research.

Research priorities

The highlight notice encourages proposals that focus on:

  • Detection and diagnosis of ILC, including imaging
  • ILC-specific therapeutic interventions and surgical techniques
  • Longer term monitoring and surveillance, including the use of liquid biopsy and other biomarker technologies
  • Quality of life and wider care and support for people living with ILC

Patient Involvement

At Lobular Breast Cancer UK, we have been working closely with NIHR to ensure that the patient voice is included in this call. We are listed in the call and inviting researchers to contact us about patient involvement in research.

Next steps

Researchers interested in applying or involving patients can contact us for guidance and support.

We want to say a big thank you to everyone at NIHR for recognising this need and their work on establishing this highlight notice.
